As of woman aged 40 plus, I am acutely aware of the changes that can happen to the body as we hit the big 4 0 or 5 0 – weight gain, bloating, headaches, mood swings  (similar symptoms to a teenager huh?)  Is there anything that we can do to help ease these very common and sometimes frustrating symptoms? Absolutely.

It’s important to recognize that our health and fitness needs change as we age and we need to adapt. The good news is that we are still at an age that we can take steps to improve our health

Get A Good Nights Sleep

Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. A good nights sleep can benefit your heart, your mind. The right amount of sleep will enable us to perform to our full potential, so we have a clear focus on the task ahead. Lack of sleep, however, affects not only our emotions but our appetite. When you are sleepy or fatigued, certain hormones are released into the body which can make us feel hungry (even if we have eaten) Hence the very common feeling of “munchies” or overeating when we feel tired.

Exercise

As we age our metabolism can start to slow down. Exercise is one of the best ways to boost the metabolism. It is also extremely valuable as it also improves our bone health, muscle strength, and coordination. These are some of the most common factors as we race past 40. Finding a regular exercise regime, that fits into your life, is the key to a healthy body at any age.

Healthy Diet

Jumping from diet to diet, fad to fad is not only mentally exhausting it has a detrimental effect on our health. A healthy diet rich in protein, fruits, veggies helps the body to work more efficiently and can ease the symptoms that are associated with getting older – bloating, headaches and weight gain. Ditch those diets and jump on the Healthy Eating Bandwagon instead.

Be Kind

Your body is going through lots of changes over the age of 40, Respect those changes, they are part and parcel of aging, we all go through them.  Okay, we may not be as energetic as when we were 20 but we can still make a difference in how we think and feel. Don’t push for unattainable workouts, diets. Instead find what works for you, what suits you and your body now.

Don’t Stress It

Stress can have a detrimental effect on our body and our mind. With continued high levels of stress, the body/mind can experience higher levels of depression and anxiety. We experience lots of changes pre-post menopause, some of them very stressful. Additional external stress can make our mind go into overdrive. Find an outlet, a stress reducing method that works for you – a yoga class, meditation, a walk in your favorite park, a trip to the beach, a cuppa and a good book.
