One of the most challenging aspects of hitting your forties is the aging process. But middle age doesn’t have to mean getting old, hanging up your high heels and saying goodbye to your highlights.
Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 40 – Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Elle Macpherson, and Michelle Pfeiffer and the list goes on. But society still dictates that women over 40 should look a certain way.
Why is Beauty reserved for the youth? Any woman, irrespective of her age can look and feel beautiful.
However, advertisers are youth-obsessed. Their beauty, health and fitness campaigns center around women under 30. But can a 40 + women relate to an anti-wrinkle cream being applied to the skin of a 20 something girl? Are we supposed to buy that?
The aging process can seem daunting, forever looking at a changing reflection. But there are things that we can do to help.
Finding a regime that suits you, searching for the fashion trend that is right for you, adapting and accepting the changes that naturally occur in middle age, can all help. We need to step out from beneath our invisibility cloak and step forward into our middle age with renewed confidence.
Here are my top 5 tips for feeling and looking great in your forties. They work for me. I hope they work for you
Take Care Of Your Face
Our skin naturally changes as we age so we need to adapt. What worked for your skin in your twenties, may not work now you’re in your forties. Look out for products that protect and repair the skin, with anti-aging properties. Develop a beauty regime that you can stick to, that suits your skin type. And remember the order of your skincare products.
- Face Mask
- Eye Cream
Revamp your wardrobe
Why should we keep to our stereotypical wardrobe, our stable black trousers, comfy dresses? Just because you are in your forties that doesn’t mean that you have to hide your body away. It also doesn’t mean you have to have a complete wardrobe overhaul. A few statement pieces, a pair of red shoes, a chunky boot, a well-fitted blazer, a statement jumper can really refresh your look. Dress for your body type and don’t be afraid to be bold.
Protect Your Bones But Don’t Be Afraid To Use Them
Bone density naturally decreases as we age, particularly as we hit the menopause/post menopause phase. Exercising is a vital part of any health drive and is particularly important as we age to protect and strengthen our joints. Aim for 20/30 minutes moderate exercise 4 times a week. Recent studies have shown that people that exercise regularly actually age better.
Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, more if you exercise. I often top up my daily intake with herbal teas, high water fruits and veggies (watermelon, celery, apples) This will help to keep your body hydrated and your skin glowing. Plus it can help to ease bloating, a common system over 40, and keep your digestive system functioning correctly.
Cut Out Processed Foods
When you feel good on the inside it shows on the outside, its a fact. Choose Foods that have a positive effect on the body, on the aging process – fresh fruits, vegetables, wholegrain, and lean meats. Stay away from foods that are processed or high in sugars, they can have a negative effect on the body leaving you feeling bloated and lethargic.
