Unfortunately, as we hit our forties our ability to lose weight quickly starts to decline. Thanks in part to a slowing metabolism and falling estrogen levels. Accordingly, to the American Society of Exercise, we burn fewer calories in our forties than we did in our twenties.

Add these together and its little wonder that most ladies post 40 find themselves putting on a few pounds and hitting the post 40 weight loss wall.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. With a few tweaks, you can still make a difference to how you look and feel post 40 and that includes weight loss.

Move It To Lose It

Unfortunately, between desk jobs, child activities, work commitments, most 40-year-olds don’t have a lot of time to commit to exercise. But if you truly want to make a difference in how you look, you need to move the body.

Exercise can help you to burn extra calories and keep your body and your mind strong and healthy. If you link an exercise regime into your healthy eating you will maximize the chances of losing weight.

Anything that increases your heart rate will help – power walking, running, stationary bike, aerobics, dance classes are all fantastic

Don’t Skip Breakfast

It’s tempting, I know. But consuming a healthy breakfast can help to curb the mid-morning hunger pangs.

Studies have also shown that eating a healthy breakfast can help to keep your appetite in check throughout the day.

Try a delicious fruit smoothie, some overnight oats or wholewheat toast.

Empty Calories

Everyone likes to have a drink every now and again, I know I do. But did you know too much alcohol can cause weight gain?

Alcohol consumption also triggers hunger, this is the reason you tend to snack more whilst drinking. Most of us believe by cutting back on the food we eat we can consume more alcohol, unfortunately, that’s not the case.

A typical glass of wine is just over 150 Calories. When you take into consideration, on average, most women consume 3/4 glasses of wine on a night out (or a weekend) that equates to 600 extra calories – empty calories.

Try Swapping your normal glass of wine for a spritzer (half soda, half wine) Cut back on mixers too, which tend to be high in sugar and calories. Replace with low-calorie mixers.

And Breath

Did you know that stress can be a big factor in weight gain post 40?  It can be the precursor for many unhealthy habits including binging on unhealthy foods.

Finding a way to relieve stress can be different for everyone, so find what works for you. Yoga, Tai Chi, Meditation can all be effective stress relievers.

Find Support

This is one of the most important weight loss tools, it also forms a vital part of my 404040 Plan. I truly believe that being accountability, having a support frame around you, can make the difference between a sustained health regime and a failed one.

Join a club, an online plan, or ask a pal to join you on a power walk, exercise class. Having a strong support network there to support, guide and encourage you to meet your goals, is vital.

I hope these tips help.  And don’t forget there are 3 ways I can help you to become fit and strong in your forties and beyond.
